Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole milk Use whole milk for a richer flavor.
  • 1 cup cream Adds creaminess and depth to the hot chocolate.
  • 2 tablespoons molasses Provides that distinct gingerbread sweetness.
  • 10 whole cloves Infuse warm, aromatic spice notes.
  • 10 whole allspice berries Adds complexity to the flavor profile.
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon Elevates the warmth and sweetness.
  • 1 inch piece of ginger (sliced) Fresh ginger brings a zingy kick.
  • 1/4 cup cocoa Essential for that rich chocolate flavor.
  • 1/4 cup semi-sweet or bittersweet chocolate Enhances the chocolate intensity.
  • to taste Whipped Cream Perfect for topping off your drink.
  • to taste Vegan marshmallows A delightful, fluffy addition for everyone to enjoy.

Method

  1. In a small saucepan, combine the whole milk, cream, molasses, and spices over low heat. You want to barely bring this mixture to a simmer without boiling it.
  2. Once your mixture is heated through, remove it from the heat and cover it. Allow it to steep for about 20 minutes so all those delightful spices can infuse their flavors into the milk and cream.
  3. After steeping, strain out the solids like cloves and ginger slices, discarding them afterward. Return the liquid back to low heat and gently reheat it before adding in your cocoa powder and chopped chocolate.
  4. Once you've added the cocoa and chopped chocolate, whisk vigorously until everything is fully melted and combined into a thick, smooth consistency.
  5. Pour your warming concoction into mugs and top generously with whipped cream or vegan marshmallows—or both if you're feeling indulgent!
